How the planner builds a system
The planner combines temperature, activity, and exposure to suggest a base layer, hoodie or insulation, and shell strategy. Activity changes moisture production; wind changes heat loss; precipitation changes whether fleece can remain exposed. Enter the hardest part of the day, not only departure conditions.
How to read the output
The base recommendation addresses moisture next to skin. The hoodie recommendation adds warmth or breathable coverage, and the shell note addresses wind or precipitation. These are roles rather than mandatory product counts: one garment can sometimes cover two roles, but combining them may reduce ventilation or adaptability. Stationary periods deserve extra attention because a system comfortable while walking can cool rapidly after movement stops.
Limits and safety margin
The output cannot account for wind chill, trip length, cold tolerance, wet crossings, altitude, delays, or garment-specific insulation. It also cannot measure fleece warmth from a product title. A hoodie alone is often inadequate in severe cold, wind, or rain. Check the forecast, understand the retreat route, and carry dry contingency layers.

Vent early, protect dry insulation, and update inputs whenever wind, precipitation, pace, or stationary time changes. Bring purpose-built rainwear or emergency insulation when exposure requires it.
Adjust during the day
Layering is an active process rather than a one-time setup. Remove insulation or open ventilation before sustained climbing, restore warmth before a long stop, and protect the dry layer from rain and sweat. Small early adjustments are more effective than recovering after clothing becomes soaked.
